Picard Nominations Due

Alphonse Picard

Alphonse Picard is recognized as the driving force behind what we know today as the Amesbury Youth Hockey League (AYHL). Mr. Picard was the first youth hockey instructor in the Town of Amesbury. He also was a member of the original North Shore Maples hockey team. When Amesbury had an outdoor rink in the Town Park, Mr. Picard was known to be at the park at 6:00am to prepare the ice for the town’s skaters. He single-handedly led groups of youth in drills and scrimmages at the Town Park rink, beginning in 1956. He coached the youth of Amesbury and watched the sport of hockey grow in popularity during the reign of Bobby Orr as a Boston Bruin. He oversaw the construction of three different rinks in Amesbury and is considered the father of the Amesbury Youth Hockey League.

His efforts, along with other concerned and dedicated individuals, were directed toward the instruction of Amesbury’s youth in the skills, strategy, and sportsmanship involved in the sport of ice hockey, as well as instilling an appreciation for the game. It is these efforts that the Amesbury Youth Hockey League would like to honor through the awarding of the Amesbury Youth Hockey League’s Annual Alphonse Picard Award.

Nomination Process
Nomination forms should be forwarded to the AYHL Board of Directors at AYHL, PO Box 294, Amesbury, MA 01913. Nominations should be received by March 1.
The Board will discuss of nominations prior to judging and selecting a winner for that year. Those nominating candidates will be afforded an opportunity to present their nomination before the Board and to answer questions during the first board meeting in April.
The winner will be notified in advance of the awards ceremony, and efforts will be made to accommodate family members at the ceremony.

To be considered for the Alphonse Picard Award, the individual must have been actively involved as a volunteer in the advancement of hockey in the greater Amesbury area and exemplified the ideals of the Amesbury Youth Hockey League as described in the League’s Bylaws.
